I was born in the small rural Maori community of Tolaga Bay, NZ. At the age of 14, I was shipped off to Gisborne Boys’ High School’s boarding hostel, which really prepared me for life’s ‘rough breaks’ (which basically means that the I got the stuffing knocked out of me for the first few years). Leaving high school with a mind that simply thought about sport, sport and more sport, I enrolled in the School of Physical Education at Otago University. During my time studying, I did pretty well in the football codes and represented Otago in rugby union, rugby league and touch football. This was also where my real introduction to high performance training began. Living with several Super 14 & international rugby union players and working with a number of NZ Academy of Sport athletes through university, I soaked up as much information as possible about what makes athletes tick.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Physical Education & Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) in 2004. Then I made the big jump across the Tasman to Australia to play semi-professional rugby league. Living with more professional athletes (only this time surfers) helped me identify what produces high performance across different sports and I quickly found a job in personal training and exercise physiology.
Fast forward five years and I am now an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and have helped to produce four world champions, Olympians and numerous state, national and professional athletes. Athletes that have trained with me include Queensland, Australian & Olympian swimmers; professional and world champion surf life saving Iron Men; world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters; world champion beach sprinters; ITU professional triathletes; international rugby union players; ASP WQS professional surfers; Gold Coast, Queensland & Australian representative junior tennis players; competitive bodybuilders & figure models; international representative Touch Football players; members of the Gold Coast Titans Under 20s rugby league team; members of the Gold Coast Titans NRL rugby league team; members of Gold Coast United soccer team and members of Gold Coast Breakers rugby union team.
To complement my work with athletes, I am also one of Gold Coast and Australia’s only Active Release Techniques (ART) practitioners. In fact, I’m the only ART Accredited Exercise Physiologist in Australia as of writing. Being ART certified has also helped me rehabilitate injured clients and clinical patients faster than ever before. I also needed to know what I was talking about with nutrition (I did a year of it at university) so I am also one of the few International Society of Sports Nutrition Certified Sports Nutritionists in Australia.
In the media, I have had my work published and been featured in a number of magazines and websites including Mens' Fitness, Mens’ Health, BSc, UltraFit, Fitness Life and the Gold Coast Bulletin. I have also had my own expert column in the multinational Mens’ Fitness magazine where I let people know my thoughts on training and fitness. Professionally, I have spoken at some of Australia's largest health & fitness, personal training and strength & conditioning conferences including ASCA’s International Conference Of Applied Strength & Conditioning, FILEX and NZ’s GetFitNZ national conference.
On the Gold Coast, I currently direct Coyne
Conditioning in Burleigh Heads. The exercise physiology and personal
training team that I have put together is the most qualified (both
practically and theoretically) you will find throughout Australia. We
have a holistic semi-personal training approach and cater for people who want to lose
body fat, rehabilitate injuries and athletes who want to take their
training to the next level.
Away from work, I am happily married to a wonderful wife and still enjoy
surfing, gymnastics, and I want to train more in Brazilian
JiuJitsu/MMA. I am also knocking over my Masters By Research degree in
applied sport science research on surfing paddling speed in conjunction
with Surfing Australia and Edith Cowan University.

Along the way, I have picked up a few qualifications and completed a substantial amount of professional education, including:
Bachelor of Physical Education

Society of Sports Nutrition
